DUI sweep leads to 276 arrests

A bill aimed at fixing Kansas' drunken driving laws received initial approval from the Senate on Wednesday. The bill, Senate substitute for House Bill 2096, will create the Kansas DUI Commission, amend some of the state's drunken driving laws and create statewide driver improvement clinics.

A man accused of being drunk when the pickup he was driving struck and killed a bicyclist was free on bail for an earlier DUI charge when the crash occurred, police said.

A 38-year-old Mulberry woman was sentenced Wednesday to about 10 years in prison for a fatal crash last year. Leah Tracy Whidden also received permanent revocation of her driver license. Whidden pleaded no contest to DUI manslaughter in the death of Theresa McVety, 43, of Lakeland.
