- Steven Tomeo:
The area of DUI has progressed from socially acceptable drinking to socially acceptable jail time.
You need to know your rights and what it is that you are facing.
It gets very complicated and you need all of the help you can get. You need a lawyer!
Check out the law, the penalties and what it is that you are facing. Don’t think that just because it is your first time that you will have no problems. And don’t think that the Courts or the DMV are going to feel sorry for you and cut you some slack.
Read through these pages and then call me. My practice is in the business of helping people charged with DUIs.
You are entitled to your day in Court and the protection of the law. You have the right to confront the system every step of the way—your accusers in particular. You have the right to challenge those who complain about you, i.e. the police or some citizen who claims you were driving erratically. Just remember what Justice Scalia of the U. S. Supreme Court said in Crawford vs. State of Washington: “Dispensing with confrontation because testimony is obviously reliable is akin to dispensing with jury trial because a defendant is obviously guilty.”
- Conway & Londregan:
You should consult an attorney for individual advice regarding your own situation.
- Suisman/Shapiro: It is
important to get the advice of legal counsel immediately if you have
been arrested or are under investigation for any criminal offense,
whether the charges are DUI / drunk driving or related to a felony
crime such as bank fraud. Do not make any statement to police,
investigators, or prosecuting attorneys.
- Steven Tomeo:
What happens when I get charged with DUI? Two things: One, you have to
go to the Connecticut Superior Court in the Geographic Area where you
were arrested and defend the DUI charge in Court. Two, you will receive
a suspension notice from the DMV and You have to schedule a hearing
challenging the suspension.
