- Rothmel, Michael:
Municipal Court is an area in which many people give up their significant rights just because they think they are guilty due to driving while suspended, intoxicated, or without insurance. Even though you may appear guilty and indeed on the surface, may have violated the offense, it does not mean that you will be found guilty in a Municipal Court. This is important to note because the penalties are severe. In addition to financial penalties of $500 to $1000 there are terms of suspension of your license that ranging from six months to ten years. Furthermore, many of the more serious motor vehicle violations carry surcharges of up to $1000 per year. If you fail to pay your surcharge you could be left in a cycle of suspensions lasting an indeterminate term and costing you tons of money. Debts that are not necessarily dischargeable in bankruptcy.
An attorney in Municipal Court can help save you by having you plead to a reduced charge, by informing you of your defenses, and convincing the Prosecutor or Judge that you are not guilty of the offense you have been charged with. Oftentimes, people plead guilty in Municipal Court when they do have defenses costing themselves several times more money than an attorney would have cost them. The adage, penny wise pound foolish applies to Municipal Court. You can save a little money by not hiring an attorney, but you pay for the consequences for years to come.
- Pollack, Jason:
Drunk driving is a serious crime with potentially serious consequences. If you have been arrested for drunk driving, it is important to have an experienced criminal defense attorney on your side.
- Michael Stein:
Municipal court judges are appointees and lean toward conviction in DUIs to appear tough on crime.

Š New Jersey and most other states and parts of Canada have joined together under the Non-Resident Violator Compact. A license suspension or serious ticket in any member state equals a ticket or loss of license in ALL 44 member states. Nonmembers as of January 1996 are: Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Michigan, Montana, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Washington, and Wisconsin. If your license is suspended in New Jersey, you cannot obtain a license in any of the member states until your New Jersey driving privileges are restored.
If you fail to pay a ticket in New Jersey, your driverÕs license in New Jersey will be suspended. It is unlikely that you will be able obtain or renew your license in your home state until you have resolved the ticket in New Jersey and had your driving privileges restored here. Most states also exchange information under the National Driver License Compact for serious violations such as DWIs and suspended license due to unpaid tickets in New Jersey. This means that these violations will be charged against your license in your home state. In some states, even less serious out-of-state traffic violations are charged against your license.
- Jeffrey Mintz:
A driving under the influence charge, for example, is one of the most
common forms of criminal liability. These types of cases, however,
involve one of the most technically complex areas of criminal law. When
a person finds himself or herself facing a DUI charge, the worst thing
he or she can do is hire the attorney quoting the lowest fee. Hiring an
experienced attorney with extensive experience in all the details of
DUI law can be the difference between a successful defense and a
conviction, or worse. A DUI can be successfully challenged and defeated
with experienced legal counsel.
